Lynn Buhl of Grosse Pointe has been named director of the Department of Environmental Quality’s southeastern Michigan offices.

The appointment was made by DEQ Director Russell Harding. Buhl will direct the DEQ’s Detroit and Livonia offices, and also serve as the department’s liaison with the cities of Detroit and Hamtramck. She begins her new duties June 1. Buhl replaces Mark Jones, who left the DEQ earlier this year to accept a private-sector position.

“The DEQ is committed to maintaining strong personal ties with Detroit and its neighboring communities,” Harding said. “Lynn shares that goal. Her dynamic, thoughtful approach to problem-solving will assist the department in effectively targeting the region’s environmental needs. Her participation in several brownfield redevelopment projects gives her an excellent understanding of issues facing urban areas. We’re extremely confident in Lynn’s abilities and are pleased to welcome her to the DEQ management team.”

“Increasingly, environmental issues require dialogue and coordination at the regional level to effect improvements,” Buhl said. “I think the state has a role to play in fostering communication between the stakeholders in southeastern Michigan and I look forward to being a part of that process.”

Buhl currently serves as DaimlerChrysler Corp.’s senior staff counsel for environmental legal affairs, a post she has held since 1988. During her tenure she participated in several high-profile brownfield redevelopment projects. She joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington as an attorney and adviser in 1985. The following year she became assistant regional counsel for EPA Region V in Chicago. From 1982 to 1984 she served as special projects coordinator for Ohio Congressman Bob McEwen.

A native of St. Louis, Mo., Buhl earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and her law degree from the Wake Forest University School of Law.
