PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED RULE CHANGES TO THE ADMINISTRATIVE RULES FOR certification of community and noncommunity public water system operators and requirements for analytical methods for chemical and microbiological contaminants and radionuclides, michigan safe drinking water act, 1976, pa 399, as amended. The Drinking Water and Radiological Protection Division will conduct a public hearing on proposed administrative rule modifications for certification of community and noncommunity public water system operators and requirements for analytical methods for chemical and microbiological contaminants and radionuclides, Michigan Safe Drinking Water Act, 1976, PA 399, as amended. The proposed rule revisions bring the current rules into compliance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidance. STORAGE TANK DIVISION

THE MICHIGAN FIRE PREVENTION CODE, 1941 PA 207, AS AMENDED. The department intends to formally adopt the proposed Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) Rules (ORR Number 98-096EQ). These proposed rules will amend the current LPG rules by updating the current rules to standard industry practices concerning the storage and handling of LPG. Following formal adoption, the rules will be submitted to the Office of Regulatory Reform and the Secretary of State. PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS THE NATURAL RESOURCE DAMAGE ASSESSMENT-PREASSESSMENT SCREEN FOR THE ALLIED PAPER, INC./PORTAGE CREEK/KALAMAZOO RIVER SUPERFUND SITE, KALAMAZOO AND ALLEGAN COUNTIES. DEQ and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff will give an overview of the Natural Resource Damage Assessment process and present the general findings from the preassessment screen. PUBLIC HEARING ON PERMIT APPLICATION SUBMITTED BY THE CITY OF BAY CITY, MICHIGAN. The Land and Water Management Division will hold a public hearing at City Hall, Council Chambers, 301 South Washington Street, Bay City, Michigan. The hearing will be for Permit Application Number 00-09-0031, submitted by the city of Bay City, to replace an existing bulkhead, dredge, place riprap, and fill in wetlands adjacent to and in the Saginaw River in preparation for commercial use. The applicant proposes to construct about 20 acres of wetland as mitigation. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers personnel will attend the hearing to observe the proceedings. FORMULAS FOR SUCCESS IN MERCURY POLLUTION PREVENTION (P2), EAST LANSING MARRIOTT AT UNIVERSITY PLACE, EAST LANSING, MICHIGAN. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality's Environmental Assistance Division, Air Quality Division, and Office of the Great Lakes, in cooperation with over a dozen co-sponsoring organizations, are sponsoring a mercury pollution prevention workshop. Focusing on "Formulas for Success," this workshop will feature the latest pollution prevention (P2) techniques on mercury devices and alternatives, voluntary P2 partnerships, policy, and steps for constructing a mercury elimination program. Innovative case studies will be featured that present step-by-step measures for achieving tangible results for gas and electric utilities and steel mills. Large industrial complexes, manufacturing facilities, paper mills, and taconite mining operations will also benefit from the steel mill case studies, since many of their uses and scale of operation are quite similar. Cost: $50 includes continental breakfast, lunch, and workshop materials. MICHIGAN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION'S 7TH ANNUAL GROUND WATER CONFERENCE, GARLAND RESORT, LEWISTON, MICHIGAN. Individuals working in any aspect of Michigan's ground water programs will want to attend the 7th Annual Ground Water Conference sponsored by the Michigan Environmental Health Association, in cooperation with the Drinking Water and Radiological Protection Division of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. An agenda is offered with technical presentations of interest to both the experienced or novice sanitarian, environmental quality analyst, geologist, or anyone interested in Michigan's ground water. Field demonstrations will also be a part of the conference. On Wednesday, October 11, 2000, WELL INSPECTOR TRAINING will be included as part of the conference. Those wishing to obtain the certificate of training must attend all of the sessions. The sessions include a general program overview, water system inspections, grouting, abandoned wells, sampling, disinfection, water system design and sizing, well permit processing, Michigan geology, and drilling site evaluations. No other conference sessions or activities are scheduled for Wednesday. 8TH ANNUAL GREAT LAKES REGION WASTE REDUCTION AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY WORKSHOP, BURTON MANOR, LIVONIA, MICHIGAN. For the eighth year, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality's Environmental Assistance Division, in cooperation with nearly 30 organizations, is planning this major event to support business and community waste reduction efforts in the Great Lakes region. Russell Perry, AIA and Managing Director of William McDonough + Partners, will begin the day with a keynote presentation. The remainder of the agenda packs information into five tracks to maximize the chances of selecting sessions most critical to attendee's interests. The five tracks include automotive, manufacturing, environmental management systems, energy efficiency, and resources to assist in waste reduction efforts. An area will be available during breaks and for half an hour after lunch where trade organizations, utilities, educational institutions, government, and nonprofit organizations will have displays and be available to answer questions. Cost: $50 includes continental breakfast, lunch, entrance into displays, and workshop materials.
